Hout Bay Information
A small distance outside of Cape Town lies Hout Bay. Jan van
Riebeeks party discovered the area now known as Hout bay in
the 1650's, the name comes from the many cypress trees which
were growing in the area, Hout Bay means Wood Bay . Battery's
were built at Hout Bay by the French to try and prevent a
British invasion during the American War of Independence -
remains of these buildings still stand today. As you drive
to Hout Bay from the Chapman's Peak road you will see the
bronze leopard mounted on rocks overlooking the bay, this
was created by late sculptor Ivan Mitford-Barberton. Dwarfed
by mountains on all sides, Hout Bay one of only a few areas
in South Africa which is surrounded by national parks. The
Hout Bay bird park is worth a visit, and down at the harbour
boat trips are offered to seal island, whale viewing can also
be enjoyed during the autumn and winter months.
Hout Bay is otherwise known as the “Jewel of the Cape”.
True to it's name, the town of Hout Bay is surrounded by mountains
and sea and magnificent panoramic views. The town of Hout
Bay is located just 20 minutes outside of Cape Town, via the
coastal road. It has been the front of many feuds and historical
events in South Africa, such as marriages of convenience and
wars.
Scenery in Hout Bay provides amazing bird life in the wetlands,
through which the Disa river flows into the bay. The mountains
surrounding the valley provides some breathtaking views and
great hiking trails.
Hout Bay was originally a fishing village, which has recently
been developed into a tourist attraction with shopping centres,
malls, lots of restaurants, luxury accommodation and quaint
atmosphere. There are over 50 restaurants in Hout Bay that
one can choose from to have lunch at.
The bay has one of the best harbours in South Africa, including
the yacht and powerboat marinas, where many people from all
over the world like to stop over on their journey. The bay
is also one of the safest places in the world for sailing,
although it can become somewhat frustrating at times.
Hout Bay houses two major sporting events, the Cape Argus
Cycling Race and the Two Oceans Marathon, which attracts people
from many walks of life.
Activities in Hout Bay includes abseiling, horse riding,
cycling, hiking, game aquatic sports, sea kayaking, champagne
sunset cruises and whale watching.
